The Australian Museum has extended the runtime for its current Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibition in response to soaring demand.

Originally slated to end on February 23, the comprehensive collection of Peruvian artefacts, Andean gold and cutting-edge technology will now run through to Sunday, May 11.

That’s plenty of time for anyone who hasn’t yet witnessed the highly progressive, wonderfully executed exhibition, which takes a multi-pronged approach at immersing guests in the complicated history, traditions and many wonders of ancient Andean cultures.

Supernatural deities, life-and-death rituals and stunningly preserved treasures build up the exhibition as a worthy follow-up to Australian Museum’s record-smashing Ramses & The Gold of the Pharaohs exhibition. While visitors can also book into an award-winning virtual reality fly-over experience, offered at an additional cost ($22) with a sizeable birds-eye journey over and through ancient Peru.

The exhibition, a Sydney exclusive for the highly progressive Australian Museum, was developed in partnership with the Ministry of Culture of Peru, Neon Global and Museo Larco.

Primitive artefacts, the VR experience and an incredible collection of Andean gold—the largest to ever travel outside of Perubuild a large-scale snapshot of the various traditions and beliefs that has built Peru into one of the world’s most unique countries. This includes the remarkable history of Machu Piccu, perched on a mountain 2,430 metres above the Amazon.

Sydney is only the fourth city in the world to host this collection and with Australia Museum holding exclusive rights, having a few more months to immersive yourself in Machu Piccu is a great opportunity for Sydney local and visitors.

For those after an ever deeper taste of Peruvian culture, the Australian Museum will host Fiesta de Peru on February 22 and 23, pitched as a vibrant weekend festival of both free and ticketed events to extend the exhibition’s cultural immersion.

Tip: The VR experience can be booked on top of a ticket and can be done so separately online. Given the demand, Sydney Travel Guide recommends you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
