Sydney’s best free historical attraction? A visit to Government House is certainly a right royal contender

In a city blessed with world-famous landmarks, Government House remains one of Sydney’s most underrated attractions.

Tucked away within the Royal Botanic Garden and overlooking Sydney Harbour, this magnificent sandstone mansion offers what may well be the best free historical house tour in the city.

While thousands walk past its gates each week on their way to the Opera House or Circular Quay, relatively few take the time to discover one of Australia’s most important historic buildings.

Those who do are richly rewarded.

The official residence of the Governor of New South Wales since 1845, Government House is far more than a museum piece. It remains a working vice-regal residence where state receptions, diplomatic functions and official ceremonies continue to be held today.

Visitors on the free guided tours are given a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes of this living piece of Australian history. One of the highlights is the grand dining room, where guests can admire a remarkable dining table dating back more than a century and still used for entertaining visiting dignitaries and heads of state.

What truly elevates the experience, however, are the guides. Their depth of knowledge is extraordinary, bringing to life stories of governors, royalty, politicians and pivotal moments in New South Wales history. Throughout the house, visitors encounter impressive portraits and artworks that chart Australia’s colonial past, providing a visual journey through the state’s development.

The building itself is spectacular. With its Gothic Revival architecture, soaring towers and honey-coloured sandstone walls, Government House looks every bit the fairytale castle. Its elevated position provides stunning views across Sydney Harbour, creating one of the city’s most picturesque settings.

Our visit coincided with the King’s Birthday long weekend in June, when the grounds were particularly festive. A jazz singer entertained visitors on the lawns, while a police band provided a fittingly ceremonial soundtrack to the day. Adding to the atmosphere was a display of beautifully maintained vintage and classic cars, drawing enthusiastic crowds of motoring enthusiasts and photographers.

Outside, the grounds are every bit as impressive as the house itself. The manicured lawns, carefully clipped hedges, and colourful garden beds blend seamlessly into the neighbouring Royal Botanic Garden. It’s the perfect place to linger after a tour, soaking up the harbour views and reflecting on nearly two centuries of New South Wales history.

In a city where many attractions come with a hefty admission price, Government House stands out as a rare gem: a world-class historical experience that costs absolutely nothing.

For visitors and Sydneysiders alike, it’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets.
