What started as a limited run has turned into a blockbuster season with numerous extensions and over 300 performances at Surry Hills’ boho-fabulous The Grand Electric. As it turns out, Michael Cassel Group were onto a winner when they brought Titanique, a satirical Off-Broadway hit, to Sydney in April 2024.

And by winner we mean out of every big-profile musical that has hit Sydney over the past 12 years, Titanique has been the one musical no one can seem to stop talking about.

Our own theatre critic, Peter Lynch, described it as a “madly joyous show” with “unsinkable humour” in his review, and the swift, constant demand has kept pushing this Olivier Award-winning musical along well past its expected expiry date. It’s now been more than eight months since the satire of the classic James Cameron blockbuster debuted for the hard-to-please Harbour City crowdโ€”and it was originally scheduled for a limited five-week run.

And we’ve now entered its final few weeks, with Titanique finally hitting that metaphorical iceberg at the end of June. That means you’ve only got a few more weeks to join everyone else in celebrating what has easily been the funniest production the city has seen in years.

The wig-snatching story reimagines the romantic tragedy of Jack and Rose with a spectacularly unhinged Cรฉline Dion inserted in the middle. Spoilers beyond that wouldn’t do justice to the subversive, spicy rollout that takes everything we’ve held dear about Titanic and doesn’t hold back.

“We know how much Sydney loves a great night out and unabashed escapism, and Titanique is the perfect show for both of those things,” said a spokesperson for the Cassel Group when asked by the Sydney Travel Guide on why this show has resonated so deeply for a local crowd.

“We’re so proud of the record-breaking run at The Grand Electric and incredible cast and crew who have kept Sydney laughing 8 shows a week.”

The hunger for more intimate Off-Broadway style musicals is obvious, but Cassel reminds us that it’s important to play on both ends of the scale.

“To have a vibrant theatrical ecosystem in Australia, it’s important to produce intimate off-Broadway shows, like Titanique, alongside the blockbuster musicals like MJ and Beetlejuice.”

With MJ The Musical currently dominating public consciousness as it continues its run at Pyrmont’s Lyric Theatre, things are looking good for Sydney’s theatres, even if the city lacks the lively punch of a West End or Broadway.  Let’s hope the success of these productions helps change that around as the city pursues a more vibrant, world-class cultural scene.
