It’s only been a few years since The Point Group opened Shell House and the mega-venue has already been firmly established as a valuable player in Sydney’s upscale dining scene. Now, the team are back with another ambitious collection of three high-concept venues all built into The International at Martin Place.
It’s another strong mark towards Sydney’s increasingly expensive tastes when it comes to lavish hospitality.
The International, slated to open sometime next month, sprouted up next to Harry Seidler’s sightly “mushroom” building in the heart of Martin Place. Located within the heritage-listed MLC Centre, the stylish three-floor venue is designed to become the cultural heart of Sydney’s most commercial strip as it guts the former site of Botswana Butchery at 25 Martin Place.
The three venues that’ll open as part of The International are
- The Wine Bar
- The Grill
- The Panorama Bar
Each will be conceptually linked but serve their own distinct identity, just like the three-in-one that has made Shell House such a spectacular project.
Chef Joel Bickford has a simple concept for The Grill. Exceptional produce cooked over fire and served simply with complete faith in provenance. A luxurious, glossy walnut bar will precede a larger dining room splashed with custom furniture and layers of deep, glossy joinery inspired by mid-century design. On paper, it sounds like that classic Mad Men-esque throwback fueled by wood-fired and charcoal grills.
The Wine Bar is pitched as a more high-energy take on your traditional European-style wine bar and restaurant with a global focus and small plates taking on many different cuisines.
This is sounding like the biggest of the three, with a 60-seat piazza-style courtyard restaurant, an intimate 40-seat wine bar overlooking Martin Place with its own imported Marana Forni pizza oven, and a 60-seat circular dining room for special occasions.
Then we’ve got The Panorama Bar on the top floor, soaking in the energy of Sydney’s skyline with a casual sip-and-snack approach its food and drink.
The Point Group position this as the ideal spot for outdoor lunches in the curvy garden terrace and golden-hour drinks with chef Danny Corbett plating up selections from the gold bar and a Hibachi grill. There may even be late-night dancing on the cards, giving Sydney yet another dancefloor to revive the city’s nightlife.
