One of the most loved rom-coms of all time is coming to the stage in Sydney. Based on the 1990 Hollywood film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Pretty Woman: The Musical is written and directed by the same team who created the film: J.F Lawton and Gerry Marshall.
Bursting with glamour, charm and all the iconic moments you know and love, the musical hit will arrive at Theatre Royal Sydney in November. Ticket details are still under wraps but the waitlist is open — read on to find out how to sign up to be the first to know when tickets drop.
Pretty Woman around the world
The musical made its world premiere in Chicago in 2018 before transferring to Broadway, where it played more than 440 performances. It also played in London’s West End for a little under two years before embarking on a nationwide tour.
Its arrival in Sydney marks another win for our theatre scene, following the likes of MJ the Musical, The Book of Mormon and multi-award-winning Hadestown earlier in the year.
A stellar team brings the movie magic to life. Two-time Tony Award-winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots and Hairspray) takes charge of the choreography and direction, while Grammy-winners Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance have provided the music and lyrics.
The big names aren’t restricted to the creative team either — ARIA Award-winning singer, songwriter and actor Samantha Jade takes the lead role as Vivian Ward. As a singer, she’s toured with global superstars including One Direction and The Backstreet Boys; on screen, she’s appeared in Home and Away and INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, and now she takes on one of the most iconic roles in rom-com land.
If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know the story. Vivian, an escort, and Edward, a businessman and her unlikely soulmate, overcome all the odds in ’80s America to find each other — and themselves. The movie made Julia Roberts a star, complete with a Golden Globe win and her first Best Actress Oscar nomination.
All your favourite scenes, lines and outfits from the original film will appear, as well as some spectacular new stage additions. It’s bold, fun and a welcome addition to Sydney’s buzzing theatrical repertoire.
