The King of Pop’s eldest son, Prince Jackson, appeared on the red—or black, in this case—carpet at the Sydney Lyric Theatre over the weekend, attending the star-studded premiere of MJ the Musical. Celebrities including TV presenter Sonia Kruger, Wiggles star Tsehay Hawkins and singer-actor Cody Simpson joined Jackson on the carpet, alongside the production’s cast and creative team.
Writer of the book and two-time Pulitzer Prize winning writer Lynn Nottage and multi-award-winning choreographer Christopher Wheeldon OBE—who won the Tony Award for Best Choreography of a Musical for MJ—also attended the premiere.

It’s not the first time that Prince Jackson has stepped out to show his support for the musical. He has previously witnessed lead star Roman Banks’ talent in the US, where Banks played Michael Jackson during the show’s first US National Tour, and in March 2024, he was joined by his siblings Paris and Bigi at the preview night in London.
MJ the Musical opens in Sydney
The four-time Tony Award-winning musical has been impressing audiences at preview performances since February 26, but Saturday night marked the official opening night.
Set across two days in 1992, during the final days of rehearsal ahead of Michael Jackson’s Dangerous World Tour, the jukebox musical features more than 40 hits by the King of Pop. The premise is simple: MTV journalist Rachel has been given access to the rehearsal room as she films a documentary about the superstar. Dancing between rehearsals and flashbacks to Jackson’s childhood and early career, the audience is given an insight into Michael the person and how life events may have impacted the creation of MJ the global star.
Roman Banks stars as Michael Jackson and is joined on stage by Liam Damons, who makes his professional theatre debut as teenage “middle” Michael. Together, the pair kick, tilt and moonwalk across the stage, performing ABC, Blame It On The Boogie, Man In The Mirror and, of course, Thriller.

Speaking to us last week, Banks shared that theatregoers were already returning for a second or third time after seeing the show in the first week—and it was still in its previews! So it’s no surprise that six more weeks’ worth of tickets have gone on pre-sale this morning. Ticket sales will undoubtedly soar following the star-studded premiere that brought Prince Jackson to Sydney.
If it’s good enough for Prince, it’s good enough for us.
