The owners behind Sydney’s most underrated French restaurant, L’Heritage, are clearly trying to craft a slice of Côte d’Azur for Sydney’s sparkling Chowder Bay.

Cafe La Mer is pitched as a bit of French Riviera resting hand-in-hand with Sydney Harbour as a thematic extension of L’Heritage, which Sydney Travel Guide named one of the most romantic restaurants in the city. The team’s penchant for world-building has given the Cafe a stunning little atmosphere, carving out a spot of the historic Chowder Bay precinct which used to be a hub for 19th century whalers.

There aren’t many places around Sydney that feel authentically European but this hole-in-the-wall cafe is an easy exception. And the L’Heritage team aren’t wasting the opportunity either; this will be a casual spot serving French snacks and picnic essentials by day, with Friday and Saturday evenings transforming the space into a buzzy Champagne bar with fresh oysters, prawns and charcuterie boards.

Tearing into a buttery pain au chocolat with a coffee in hand while you relax on a deck chair and look out over Chowder Bay sounds like a great start to any day. Similarly, heading to Cafe Le Mar after a beach sessions for a quick Aperol Spritz should ferry you straight to the shores of Positano, making this the most transportive corner of leafy Mosman for anyone missing European summer.
