Les Misérables will storm the Sydney Opera House next year

  • Opera Australia has announced that Les Misérables will return to Sydney in 2027.
  • The blockbuster musical will make its Sydney Opera House debut next August.
  • Here’s everything you need to know, including how to secure your tickets.

One Day More? Actually, there’s one day LESS to wait to see the blockbuster musical Les Misérables, which is set to make its Sydney Opera House debut in August 2027.

Ok, we would apologise for the terrible pun, but we’re too excited to care. The legendary musical will return to Australia for its first fully staged production in more than a decade, following its record-breaking run between 2014 and 2016.

Cameron Mackintosh’s acclaimed production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s musical sensation will play in the Sydney Opera House’s Joan Sutherland Theatre from August 27, 2027. The length of the season and the exact closing date are yet to be revealed.

Following the success of The Phantom of the Opera on Sydney Harbour, Opera Australia looks set to continue its winning streak with blockbuster musicals.

One of the most successful musicals of all time, Les Misérables has been seen by more than 150 million people across 57 countries and has been translated into 22 languages. It has won over 275 major awards around the world, including five Olivier Awards, eight Tony Awards and five Helpmann Awards.

In 2012, the musical was adapted for the big screen, boasting a star-studded cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne, and went on to win three Academy Awards.

Opera Australia’s Director of Opera Amy Lane expressed her excitement at the musical’s arrival, stating,

“We’re incredibly proud to be able to present this legendary musical on our iconic stage for the first time, a full forty years on from when it first took this country, and the world, by storm.

“Les Misérables is one of the defining musical theatre works of the modern era and to welcome it to the Sydney Opera House under Opera Australia’s banner is enormously significant, not only because of the musical’s global stature, but because it represents the very best of epic music storytelling.”

Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular recently wrapped up a mammoth world tour, selling 1.3 million tickets across 35 cities worldwide, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Created to celebrate the musical’s 40th anniversary, the Arena Concert Spectacular was reimagined for enormous arenas and large-scale venues. It played a limited run of just under two weeks at Sydney’s TikTok Entertainment Centre in 2025.

In contrast, the 2027 Sydney season will return to a traditional setting, with the production taking over the Joan Sutherland Theatre, which seats 1,507 people.

Even legendary producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh is getting swept up in the excitement, sharing his enthusiasm for Les Misérables’ Sydney Opera House premiere, stating,

“To finally see it on the stage of the Sydney Opera House is something I have been dreaming of for years, and it feels like a wonderful new landmark for this remarkable musical, especially after the success of Phantom of the Opera here in 2022.”
