A bakery by day and wine bar by night? How very Potts Point.

I must not have been paying attention to The Grumpy Baker’s tremendous growth over the past few years, but the reinvigorated castle of carbs has just opened its 12th outpost.

Now boasting a small shopfront on the quieter end of Macleay Street, one of Sydney’s most varied bakeries has been the talk of town this week as it continues to pull in snaking queues just days into its new digs.

The first Grumpy Baker opened over 20 years on Oxford Street, immediately cooking up its own identity with founder Michael Cthurmer drawing heavily from his Israeli heritage.

Much like the bakery’s other footprints across the state, The Grumpy Baker Potts Point includes many references to the classic Jewish bakery, from challah with chicken schnitzel, roasted eggplant, spicy Romanian salad and lettuce ($18) to the signature breakfast plate ($15) with a hard boiled egg, labneh, Israeli salad, olives and a fresh knot roll.

Yet its the artisan sourdough that The Grumpy Baker is most recognised for. You’ll find all types displayed in the large glass window fronting the shop, from carrot sourdough ($9) and olive boule sourdough ($9.50) to plain white boule sourdough ($9).

This particularly Grumpy Baker will have a nice little distinction as well. It’s only the second location to secure a liquor licence, meaning this bakery will seamlessly transform into a bar at night, serving up cocktails, wines and just about anything that’ll work for the adventurous Potts Point crowd. Given the petite size of the venue and sociable layout, we think this will slot quite well into the area’s ever-present bar scene.
