Sydney Fringe Festival is kicking off its 2026 program with a huge free street party on Stanley Street, bringing live performances, circus acts, music and plenty of surprises to Darlinghurst. The 2026 Sydney Fringe Festival is coming in hot this Saturday, with a huge free street party set to take over Stanley Street this Saturday.
The iconic Darlo street, which is known for its wealth of great restaurants, cafes and bars, will shut down from 3pm until 10pm to make way for roving performers, boundary-pushing acts and an early taste of the fest.
Although there’s an official schedule for “Fringe Ignite!” expect a few surprises along the way. The program promises that Stanley Street will transform “into a living, breathing stage where anything can happen, and every corner holds a surprise.”
Stanley Street regularly closes to traffic for the government-run Sydney Streets, with the popular event often reaching capacity early in the day. So, there’s little doubt the Fringe Festival’s takeover will draw just as big a crowd, with visitors looking to make the most of the quirky community party.
The best part? It’s completely free. While you don’t need a ticket to join the party, Sydney Fringe Festival recommends registering in advance to help you secure your spot.

Where to eat on Stanley Street
Some of Stanley Street’s favourite venues will be joining in on the fun, too. Cocktail bar Stanley’s on Stanley will host a huge DJ takeover, with local talents including Max Power and Alexa Silva taking to the decks.
And if you’re planning to make a full day of it, why not settle in for lunch or dinner?
Stanley Street is known for its incredible hub of Italian restaurants (it’s actually known as Sydney’s first “Little Italy”), so there’s no better time to sip on an Aperol spritz and get through a huge plate of pasta.
Drop by the iconic Bill & Toni’s, which has stood strong on Stanley Street since 1965. Order their iconic combination meal (for $35), which features a schnitzel with a side of Spaghetti Bolognese, Penne Napoletana or Penne Boscaiola (for an extra $2).
Harry’s by Giuls offers up homemade pasta, modern pizzas and Italian tapas, alongside an exclusively Italian wine list. You can also opt for one of their set menus, which includes arancini, green olives, prosciutto, vodka pasta, Margherita pizza and more for $79.
Bar Nina is serving up happy hour from 4pm to 6pm daily, with $12 cocktails, while its bottomless lunch and dinner runs from 12pm to 8pm, featuring seasonal share plates alongside unlimited house wine and tap beer.
Another great option for dinner is Funkatello, which serves up a killer burrata dish with vine-ripened tomatoes, drizzles of rich balsamic and complimentary housemade focaccia. Their bucatini all’amatriciana is also a great pick: think a simple but delicious tomato sauce with pancetta and red chilli peppers finished off with a generous sprinkle of pecorino cheese.
For something cheap and cheerful, make a beeline for Bar Reggio, just off Stanley Street on Crown Street. With BYO and set menus starting from $45 per person, it’s an easy win for a budget-friendly feast.
