Vivid Sydney gives rise to many different shapes and sizes around Sydney. The world-famous, completely free Vivid Light Walk will transform our cityscape with unique light installations from some of the world’s top artists, there’ll be a bunch of heady keynote discussions and ideas thrown around, a heap of live music is on the cards from big names like Sigur Ros and Beth Gibbons, and we can look forward to special dinners curated by everyone from Nigella Lawson to Neil Perry.
But then there’s dance.
Vivid Sydney is as much about fun, movement and community than anything else, and Sydney knows exactly what kinds of parties to throw to help facilitate. We’ve rounded up five of our favourite Vivid Sydney dance parties that you can still get tickets for so you know where you can boogie after hours.

1. Sound Escape
City Recital Hall has never really been a part of Vivid Sydney before, but one of our city’s most sophisticated concert venues is certainly making the most of their big debut. Billed for one night only across the June long weekend, the Angel Place staple will hand the keys to 25 bands, solo artists and DJs who are promising a “surrealist dream of light and sound” with performance throughout mixed with light and art installations.
Tickets are already selling fast for the party (it’s already on 2nd release), which will feature a DJ set from The Jungle Giants and Haiku Hands along with sets from DICE, Soju Gang, Stev Zar, Mell Hall, KLP, POOLCLVB, Tseba, La Foxy Fuzz, LUPO.THEBOY and prettyboi.zeke. That works out to around six hours of non-stop party and performance across four stages.
Where: 2 Angel Pl, Sydney NSW 2000
When: Saturday, June 7
Price: $89
2. Studio Party by DUNJ
Vivid Sydney’s Studio Parties are legendary. Buried deep in the bowls of Sydney Opera House, the institution’s most underused space, The Studio, turns into a Studio 54-esque series of raves and disco nights curated by some of Australia’s most reliable party starters. There’s a few on the list, and we’ve included our favourites, but the one we’re looking forward to the most is the Studio Party by Sydney-based party collective DUNJ.
Since forming in 2012, DUNJ has always been a bastion of diverse tastes, established as one of several dance music collectives that have powered the city’s nightlife with both underground and commercial parties for the past decade. Vivid Sydney will give them the reigns to curate a Studio Party with a wide scope, spanning the full spectrum of dance music from deep dubstup to psytrance.
Expect sounds from Tunisian artist Azu Tiwaline, Berlin-based English producer Shackleton, and DUNJ’s fan-favourite residents like Alec Sander and Jas Peters.
Where: Sydney Opera House
When: Friday, May 30
Price: $59.90
3. Moktar at Carriageworks
Moktar landed on a winning formula when the Egyptian-Australian DJ started blending techno with traditional Arabic instrumentation. It’s taken him to parties all around the world, steadily building demand for his unique sound and ability to absolutely dominate any dancefloor he sees.
The DJs high-energy should get a workout as he takes over Carriageworks for one night only, a key part of the art hub’s live music program with a fix on global dance music that strays far from the norm. His sets have been described as cultural and communal experiences as much as they have full-blown raves.
Where: Carriageworks; 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh
When: Saturday, June 14
Price: $59
4. 10 Years of NLV Records
There’s something about a 10th anniversary that pushes artists to put their very best foot forward. NLV Records will be doing just that as it presents a high-energy, genre-agnostic venue takeover at The Metro Theatre with a lineup that spans everything from Korean hip hop to electronica and future bass.
The beats won’t stop knocking once Western Sydney’s mighty 1300 hit the stage. The dynamic Korean-Aussie rap group will be sharing a line up with dancehall artist Gold Fang, Ninajirachi, Laces, Strict Face, Lewis CanCut and label-founder Nina Las Vegas going b2b with Anna Lunoe.
Given Vegas and Lunoe have been shouldering Sydney’s dance scene for well over a decade, this should be one massive celebration scoping out the city’s long history with dance music in all its forms.
Where: Metro Theatre; G2/624 George St, Sydney
When: Saturday, June 14
Price: $49.90
5. Studio Party by Trackwork
Although they’re still relatively new on the sound, Sydney label Trackwork has made a massive impact on the evolution of underground raves and dance parties in Sydney. So it’s no surprise so see their name on the curated list of Vivid Sydney Studio Parties this year. They’ll be celebrating their fifth birthday in style with a huge party in the depths of Sydney Opera House, headlined by Western Sydney rapper Vv Pete, label founder UTILITY, and special guest French DJ Brodinski. How good.
Where: Sydney Opera House
When: Thursday, May 29
Price: $59.90
