  • Opera Australia has added an extra week of performances added due to popular demand
  • Performances scheduled for April 28 to May 3, 2026
  • Next year will mark the 40th anniversary year of Phantom of the Opera

Handa Opera on Sydney harbour has just announced an extra week of performances for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera.

Due to record breaking bookings for the spectacular Phantom of the Opera production set against Sydney’s spectacular skyline, Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour have released an additional week of tickets. Tens of thousands of fans have already purchased their exclusive seats for the outdoor theatre and global phenomenon. Due to such overwhelming sales, an extra week of performances have been added from April 28 to May 3, 2026.

It’s being called the once on a lifetime opera extravaganza. An outdoor stage where the centre-piece of the set is a six-metre tall, gold-foiled sweeping staircase, and a proscenium arch inspired by Paris’s Palais Garnier Opera House. No less than 45 cast members adorn this stage, alternating between 220 costumes in total. Designed by theatrical collaborator Gabriela Tylesova and lit by Nick Schlieper, it’s a theatrical phenomenon.

Next March’s production had initially attracted a waitlist of 30,000 before tickets went on sale in mid 2025, according to Opera Australia acting chief executive Simon Militano. 2026 will mark the 40th anniversary year of Phantom and will be directed by Simon Phillips, who created the 2022 production with much success.

In 2022 Handa Opera on the Harbour was hampered by heavy rain and wild weather, yet the season still sold 61,580 tickets. This 2026 production is forecast to break these numbers, bringing a much needed financial boost to Opera Australia following a devastating financial loss over the Covid 19 years.

The iconic global production, Phantom has been seen by more than 160 million people in 205 cities across 58 territories and performed in 21 languages. This 2026 Sydney production will be the first in the lineup of a worldwide program of anniversary celebrations. Opera Australia will also be celebrating 70 years in a well timed coincidence.
