Last-Minute Guide to Sydney’s Fireworks

Prepare for the Sydney fireworks with these practical tips on what to do and where to go on the night.

The 2024/2025 Sydney fireworks

  • 9pm Calling Country fireworks: This year’s 9pm Calling Country fireworks will feature a Welcome to Country and a smoking ceremony. The display will be choreographed to a soundtrack of Indigenous electronic music.
  • Midnight fireworks: The midnight fireworks will be the biggest and most impressive yet, with over 100,000 individual pyrotechnic effects. There will be four aerial platforms launching fireworks between the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and new firing positions on the western side of the bridge.
  • Harbour of Light Parade: Don’t miss the illuminated flotilla of more than 50 vessels in the Harbour of Light Parade at 10:30pm.

Transport

  • Public transport is the best way to get around. Plan your trip ahead of time using the Trip Planner on the Transport for NSW website.
  • Sydney Trains will be running a special New Year’s Eve timetable. There will be extra services and some stations will be closed.
  • Major roads in the city centre will be closed. Allow plenty of extra travel time if you are driving.
  • Consider walking or cycling. This is a great way to avoid the crowds and get some exercise.

Best Spots

  • The City of Sydney website has a map of vantage points. These are the best places to watch the fireworks.
  • Some vantage points are ticketed, so book ahead of time.
  • Popular spots fill up quickly, so arrive early.
  • Consider vantage points outside the city centre. These may be less crowded.

Weather

  • Sydney is expected to reach highs of 27°C with periods of sunshine throughout the day.
  • Cloudy, and becoming breezy in the afternoon.
  • For the fireworks, the temperature is expected to drop to 21°C and it will be mainly clear and humid.

Safety

  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water, especially if it is a hot day.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Don’t carry too much cash.
  • If you are drinking alcohol, do so responsibly.
  • Look after your friends.

Getting Home Tips

  • Allow plenty of extra time to get home.
  • Consider walking or cycling if you are staying close to the city centre.
  • Use public transport. There will be extra services running.
  • If you are driving, be patient and drive safely.

Where to Watch at Home

  • The fireworks will be broadcast live on ABC TV and iview.
