The best places to catch free live music in Sydney

Whether you’re after a laid-back afternoon soundtracked by jazz or a high-energy night of rock, these are the best spots in Sydney to catch live music without spending a cent.

Sydney is often criticised for its lack of nightlife, but this list proves the city’s music, dance and late-night culture is still thriving – you just need to know where to look! The Inner West remains a hotspot for live music venues, but you’ll also find free gigs and live sets everywhere from Manly to Surry Hills and Woolloomooloo.

Whether you’re planning a night of jazz, dancing or live bands, here’s where to head to catch free live music in Sydney.

1. The Cricketer’s Arms, Surry Hills

One of Sydney’s most iconic pubs, The Crix has been a Surry Hills institution since 1921. For the full Crix experience, start with an early dinner at Chez Crix on a Wednesday before heading downstairs to the bar for a glass of wine and the pub’s free weekly jazz night. Wednesdays are The Crix’s biggest night, with its free weekly jazz sessions consistently drawing a lively crowd.

2. Botany View Hotel, Newtown

Sat at the south end of bustling King Street, Botany View Hotel is one of the best live music venues in Sydney offering a variety of music from indie rock and jazz to DJs and RnB. The venue has nine different rooms, including the Tiki Bar, the Main Stage (with a 180-person capacity), a pool room and an open-air rooftop. You can check out their upcoming events here.

3. Razz Room, CBD

Part discotheque, part daiquiri bar, Razz Room may be a newcomer to Sydney’s live music scene, but it comes with serious hospitality credentials. The venue is backed by the team behind local favourites Duke of Enmore and Pleasure Club, so it’s little surprise it has quickly found its groove. With free entry every night, Razz Room hosts a steady rotation of live music, leaning into jazz, disco and funk, the kind of soundtrack designed to lure you straight onto the dancefloor.

4. Felons Barrel Room, Manly

We’re big fans of Felons Barrel Room at STG, the lively waterfront venue on Manly Wharf helping bring live music back to the Northern Beaches. The spacious indoor spot hosts free live music every Thursday night and, while some events are ticketed, there are still plenty of free gigs to enjoy while sipping one of their cold, crisp lagers.

5. Old Fitz, Woolloomooloo

My favourite way to spend a Sunday in Sydney (especially if the weather isn’t great)? Stopping by the Old Fitz in Woolloomooloo for a roast dinner and a pint before enjoying their free jazz sets, “Puttin’ On the Fitz”, which kick off from 2pm. You can’t go wrong.

6. Vic on the Park, Marrickville

Whether you’re heading to Vic on the Park to shoot some hoops on its outdoor basketball court or to catch one of its free live music nights, you’re in good hands either way. This Marrickville favourite offers free entry and consistently strong line-ups, with local bands regularly taking over the stage, making it a go-to for live music lovers and a firm local favourite.

7. Restaurant Hubert, CBD

Tucked beneath the CBD, Hubert is a moody, French-inspired restaurant where jazz is woven into the experience. Whether you’re settling in for a long, candlelit dinner or stopping by its in-house bar, Bar Pincer, for a drink, live jazz sets the tone from lunch through to dinner every day on the sultry red-hued Mr Creosote Stage. As Hubert puts it: “At Hubert, jazz isn’t a performance – it’s part of the atmosphere, an invitation to slow down, indulge, and let the night unfold.”

8. Duke of Enmore, Enmore

The Duke of Enmore is one of the Inner West’s buzziest pubs and live music venues, located in a prime position on Enmore Road. Although the Duke predominantly hosts rock bands, they also dip into a slower vibe on Sunday, with live blues sets paired with barbecues, raffles and a 4pm-6pm happy hour.

Where: 148 Enmore Rd, Enmore NSW 2042.

Pleasure Club Newtown

9. Pleasure Club, Newtown

Okay, this is the fourth Odd Culture Group venue on the list (after Duke of Enmore, Old Fitz and Razz Room), but there’s a reason they keep showing up: they know how to do nightlife well. Pleasure Club pairs a late licence (until 4am) with the moody atmosphere of an underground cocktail bar, serving innovative drinks alongside a rotating lineup of DJs and live bands. It’s the kind of place where one drink easily turns into a late night, so keep an eye on their Instagram to stay across upcoming sets and events.

10. Curtains Jazz Club, CBD

Inspired by iconic jazz rooms from around the world (from London’s Ronnie Scott’s to Tokyo’s intimate record bars), Curtains Jazz Club brings live music to the stage seven nights a week, from 5pm until late. The late-night venue hosts some of Sydney’s best jazz musicians, with nightly sets spanning soulful grooves to high-energy improvisation, all paired with sophisticated cocktails, rare spirits and a moody, vintage-inspired atmosphere.
