All the free things at Vivid Sydney (2026): Lights, music, food & more

Vivid Sydney is back from Friday, May 22 to Saturday, June 13, 2026, invigorating the Harbour City for 23 nights with dazzling lights, music, food and ideas. But don’t worry if one of the blockbuster events is beyond your budget this year – most of Vivid is free.

Making the most of Vivid Sydney can seem like a daunting task for anyone on a budget. But here’s something everyone planning to go to Vivid should know – most of it won’t cost you a cent. In fact 80 per cent of the festival is free.

And in my view, most of the free stuff at Vivid is actually better than the events people are shelling out hundreds of dollars to secure a ticket.

It’s not just the big attractions like The Lighting of the Sails (although that is one of the highlights for me) and the Drone Show. Vivid Sydney’s free music program Tumbalong Nights will feature an expanded lineup of local and international artists, offering even more free, all-ages performances across the festival in 2026.

Then there’s the Vivid Fire Kitchen, with something new to experience and see every night, and the Vivid Fire Pit, where you can wander around and get up close with chefs and flamemasters as they showcase their skills. Plus there’s dance parties, talks, events to keep the kids happy and more.

So put your wallet away and dig into our guide to plan the perfect free Vivid experience.

Star-Bound: Vivid Sydney Drone Show

It’s back! After being cancelled in 2025, the drones return to Vivid Sydney, lighting up the skies above their new home at Darling Harbour. There will be 22 shows across 12 nights featuring 1000 drones working as one to create a showcase of the beautiful ways that patterns repeat across plants, animals and our solar system set to a stirring orchestral score with pulsating electronica by acclaimed Australian composer Antony Partos.

Where: Cockle Bay, 201 Sussex St, Sydney
When: Sundays to Wednesdays from May 24 – June 10 (except Sunday June 7), 7.30pm & 9.30pm

Lighting of the Sails

The Sydney Opera House sails will host Opera Mundi, a breathtaking projection by French artist Yann Nguema inspired by nature and the vision of architect Jørn Utzon. Opera Mundi – which translates to “works of the world” – embraces this sensitive connection to nature and expands on it with breathtaking animations, in which microcosms are transformed into luminous, kinetic forms.

When: May 22 – June 13, 6pm – 11pm

The Light Walk

In 2026, the Vivid Light Walk returns to being a free unbroken 6.5km immersive journey along the Sydney Harbour foreshore. From the Sydney Opera House to The Goods Line, taking in Circular Quay, The Rocks and Barangaroo, there’s more than 40 light installations to check out. And the good news for families with young kids, the route will be fully pram accessible and many of the installations are designed to be seen during the day before they transform at night. Highlights in include the 23-metre Molecule of Light laser show, the Obstacle LED corridor, and Dear You – a glowing message-in-a-bottle – and Koro Loko – a glittering, giant love heart for the perfect selfie. You can do it all in one night or drop in or out along the trail.

Where: Circular Quay, The Rocks, Baragaroo and Darling Harbour
When: Lights on between 6-11pm every night.

The State Library Unplugged

Get away from the hustle and bustle and recharge in the State Library of New South Wales. Back after its popular debut last year, this free Friday night offers visitors plenty of different spaces to create, read, write, engage, think, play and relax in the zen surroundings of this underrated building. Head to the Mitchell Reading Room for origami and games while in the Friends Room, catch short talks and ideas. Throughout the night, hear from a range of artists including underground hip hop and r’n’b star A.GIRL, flautist duo The DeeBeeTees, and bush song custodians Warren Fahey Trio. You do need to register for this one.

Moonlight Opera is a must-see … and it’s free!

Tumbalong Nights

The line-up for Vivid Sydney’s Tumbalong Nights is ridiculously good and if you can’t find someone you like, then you really aren’t trying hard enough. There’s global icons and emerging talent, indie acts pushing boundaries, First Nations storytelling and concerts for kids. It is worth checking out the full program at vividsydney.com but my highlights include Souled Out on May 31, which sees legendary Sydney DJ Stephen Ferris lead a night of new and old gems of disco, funk and groove; two-time ARIA Award winner Matt Corby and Gretta Ray who will help bring Vivid to a close on June 13; and Moonlight Opera on June 5, which takes opera’s most electrifying and famous tunes and delivers them in a dramatic and joyous way.

Where: Tumbalong Park, 11 Harbour St, Sydney, NSW
When: May 22 – June 13.

Vivid Fire Kitchen

The biggest food party settles in to its new waterfront home as a reimagined dining hub which will be home to more than 60 of Australia’s leading culinary talent and 20-plus vendors. Now the word vendor will give you a big clue that while this is free to enter, feeding yourself is not. There’s three stages, themed evening and live music spread across Barangaroo Reserve.

Vivid Fire Pit

The Vivid Fire Pit is new for 2026. It’s an open air arena where Australia’s most acclaimed chefs cook over four different fire methods while you wander around, watching it all unfold and literally feeling the heat. The rotating line-up includes Mindy Woods, Mark Best, Ben Devlin, and Sharon Salloum who will turn out one-off dishes created exclusively for the night. The best thing is the chefs are up for a bit of crowd interaction so come with a question. The dishes themselves are available to buy on the night but there’s no ticket required to soak up the show.

Where: Barangaroo Reserve
When: May 22 – June 13

Food For Thought

Tucked inside the Vivid Fire Kitchen, the Food for Thought is another brand new part of Vivid Sydney’s program. Celebrity chefs including Luke Mangan and Julie Goodwin are on the bill with other changemakers and culinary talent to create engaging conversations about food, culture, community and making an impact.

There’s themed nights, too. No Taste Like Home is held on Mondays and Tuesdays and will celebrate NSW wine and produce, regions and culinary talent while Gwianga, which takes its name from the Dharug word for fire – is a First Nations culinary showcase each Wednesday, presented with the National Indigenous Culinary Institute. Mondays are also home to Battle of the Somms, where leading sommeliers go head‑to‑head through interactive tastings, while NSW winemakers host talks and tastings on Thursdays, continuing at the main bar on Fridays and Saturdays.

Close out the week with Sunday sessions as Maybe Sammy bartending maestro Emre Bilgin presents an exclusive cocktail menu.
