The Phantom of the Opera is a title already known across countries and cultures thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s genius, which turned it into a world-conquering phenomenon. The production first debuted forty years ago and has since become a cult classic, impressing the audience and critics alike.
Witness the stunning musical in the open air, under the glimmer of the stars, in the now-iconic setting of Sydney Harbour. Enjoy the larger-than-life staging while sipping a drink from the themed pop-up bars or a full dining experience while admiring the fireworks and delighting yourself with the harmonious music played by the live orchestra hidden beneath the stage, making it a night you’ll never forget.
Production Details: Phantom of the Opera Creative Team and Cast
Take a look at this curated list of the people behind the critically acclaimed, spectacular Phantom of the Opera event:
Musical supervisor: Guy Simpson
Guy Simpson has been a Conductor, Orchestrator, Musical Director, and Musical Supervisor for the past 47 years, of which the last 10 years were spent at Opera Australia. Guy has done the Phantom of the Opera show before, both at Sydney Harbour and at the Opera House, and has worked with the production for over 36 years in Australia and outside the country.
For this year’s hotly anticipated return, he’s already working hard to bring out the Phantom’s timeless charm on the enormous stage.
Director: Simon Phillips
The winner of seven prestigious Green Room Awards and six Helpmann Awards, Simon Phillips has an incredible range, from directing modern works to Shakespearean classics, both in musicals and opera.
Simon is already familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s global phenomenon, having previously worked on the new Australasian version of Love Never Dies. He is thrilled to celebrate Phantom’s milestone anniversary in the best way possible on the open-air, enormous stage built on Sydney Harbour.
Set and costume designer: Gabriela Tylesova
Gabriela’s achievements speak volumes: she designed the sets and costumes of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, collaborated with David McAllister on a picture book of The Sleeping Beauty, and won many internationally acclaimed awards.
Having already worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the Australian premiere of Phantom sequel Love Never Dies, Gabriela is sure to bring the musical theatre to a whole new level, creating a larger than life staging and audacious costumes.
One of the many impressive feats is the full live orchestra hidden beneath the stage, making sure the music perfectly fills Sydney Harbour with harmonious tones. You’ll get to experience the show’s defining moments, such as the mirror, the journey to the Phantom’s lair, and the chandelier in grand style, on the enormous stage.

Venue & Accessibility: Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour Practicalities
The event happens at Fleet Steps, Mrs. Macquaries Point, Sydney, a gorgeous open-air location overlooking the Opera House.
Even though close by and sharing the same stunning Sydney Harbour setting, the venue is not the Sydney Opera House.
If you want to access the venue via the Royal Botanic Garden, please note that you can only do so before 06:30 pm in March, 6 pm in April, and 05:30 pm in May.
As far as accessibility goes, the venue features wheelchair and companion seating allocations available upon contacting the customer support team of the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. You can do so Monday to Friday (9 am – 5 pm) at this phone number: 02 9318 8200.
If needed, there’s also an available lift for wheelchair users, which takes you from ground level to level 1 and level 2.
Assistance animals are also welcome at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour, as long as you contact the support team before your arrival to receive proper seating for you and your companions.
Weather Policy: All Weather Event Preparedness
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour is in the open, automatically making it an all-weather event as well. Both guests and performers will be under the open sky, and the event will go on even in doubtful or unfavourable weather conditions.
Since Sydney’s weather can be unpredictable, patrons are kindly advised to come prepared: bring warm, waterproof clothing in case of rain, as umbrellas are not allowed during the performance. Biodegradable ponchos are also available for sale at the location, in case you are not properly prepared.
Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour will only cancel the performance in the event of electrical storms within a 10km radius, or during extremely high winds. It’s important to keep in mind that the event can be cancelled even once the show is underway, or, sometimes, it can be delayed or paused (at any point of the play) for up to 50 minutes.
In any case, the additional travel expenses, such as accommodation or transport related to the event, are considered the patrons’ responsibility, which means Opera Australia cannot refund those.
Tickets & Booking: Authorised Ticket Sellers and Opera Australia Tickets
Tickets for Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour are available through Opera Australia’s main official channels and authorised ticket sellers. These include Ticketmaster, TodayTix, and Sydney Opera House.
Your tickets will only be refunded in case of something major happening, such as canceling the event before the interval, rescheduling it two hours earlier or later than originally programmed, or in case of issuing a ticket by mistake.
To exchange or ask for a refund of the tickets, you must contact the seller either by mobile phone (before midday) or online (at least three hours before the start of the event). Opera Australia can ask you to detail your circumstances and decide whether they can refund/exchange your tickets or not, as permitted by law. Keep in mind that additional fees can be imposed in this case.
It’s strongly recommended that you book your tickets early to ensure you get the preferred seats.
Authorised Ticket Sellers for : Booking Details and Warnings
For any questions regarding your tickets, you can contact Opera Australia’s support team via mobile phone at 02 9318 8200 or email at [email protected].
Keep in mind that the number of unauthorised ticket sellers has increased lately. These include, but are not limited to, Viagogo, Tickets Australia, Ticket Merchant, Ticket Blaster, TicketBis, Ticketmaster Resale, Queen of Tickets, eBay, or Gumtree. It’s recommended to avoid unofficial sites or third-party resale options, as you may receive invalid or overpriced tickets. If you’re unsure about the validity of your tickets, you can always contact Opera Australia’s support center.
Getting There: Public Transport, Parking, and Venue Access
The most efficient way to get to the venue is by public transport, as Mrs. Macquaries Road will likely experience traffic congestion due to the large number of participants. If you choose to use your personal car, however, the closest car park is Domain Car Park, open 24 hours, which benefits from a free shuttle bus that is also wheelchair accessible.
The shuttle bus runs from 04:30 pm until the start of the performance on a loop, the ride taking about 5 minutes, and leaving guests at the venue entrance on Mrs. Macquaries Road. The post-performance shuttle service runs from 08:45 pm and functions until the last guest leaves. Keep in mind that the return shuttle ride can drop you off at either Domain Car Park or Hyde Park.
You’ll also find metered parking along Mrs. Macquaries Road, Hospital Road, and Macquarie Street. These accept credit cards or phone pay.
Better transport options include buses, trains and water taxis. The nearest train stations are at St. James (approximately 1.3km away, or a 16-minute walk), Martin Place (approximately 1.5km away, or an 18-minute walk), or Circular Quay (approximately 2.3km away, or a 29-minute walk). You can, however, save time if you walk through the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney — as long as you keep in mind that the garden gates close at 06:30 pm in March and at 6 pm in April.
H20 water taxis are a great way of savouring the surroundings and can be pre-booked while purchasing the tickets to the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour or purchased on the spot via card payment — one such ticket is 15$ each way. They leave from Man O’War Jetty (near the Sydney Opera House) from 5 pm to 07:30 pm, and drop off at The Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool wharf in Woolloomooloo, which is a 5-minute walk from the venue. The return water rides begin immediately after the performance and run every 10-15 minutes, with the last one departing by 11:00 pm.
