Cast your minds back to 2012, when the infectious folky sounds of Ho Hey! burst onto airwaves and wormed its way into every playlist (or was that just us?). It catapulted the American duo, The Lumineers, into global fame and earned them the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 and went gold here in Australia.

More than a decade later, they’re touring the world with their latest album Automatic โ€” and this morning, it’s been announced that The Lumineers will bring their foot-stomping magic back to Australia and New Zealand. Their long-awaited return will kick off the new year perfectly in January 2026.

20 years of The Lumineers

Lead singer Wesley Schultz and percussionist and pianist, Jeremiah Fraites, may have won global recognition in 2012 but they’d been collaborating long before then. Playing gigs around New York in the early 2000s, they performed under various names including Free Beer and Wesley Jeremiah.

So where did The Lumineers come from? Firstly, in case you’re wondering what it means: “It doesn’t mean anything literally. It’s a made-up word,” Schultz explained to People.

As for the lore… one day, at a small club in Jersey City, the emcee mistakenly introduced the pair as The Lumineers (a band called Lumineers was due to play the same day at the same time, only the following week). A mistake that stuck.

Automatic World Tour

Since releasing their fifth studio album Automatic on February 14, 2025, The Lumineers have been lighting up stages across North America and Europe. Sydney fans havenโ€™t had the joy of a full headline show since their Brightside album tour in November 2022. Even better? This marks not only a major return to our shores, but their first headline tour stop in New Zealand, too.

They will perform in Sydney on Friday, 16 January 2026, following shows in Christchurch, Auckland, Melbourne and Brisbane, before heading to Adelaide and Perth.
