GATSBY at The Green Light will transform the Opera House into a roaring speakeasy this summer

My interest in writing grew after completing work experience at The Guardian Newspaper in London. I then studied English Literature at University, where I was the Director of Commentary at Wayzgoose Magazine, which focused on student life, arts and culture. After moving to Sydney in 2023, I became fascinated with travel journalism and the diverse number of events and activities that Sydney has to offer.

  • Gatsby at the Green House will return to the Sydney Opera House this December.
  • Inspired by the infamous parties of Jay Gatsby, the show involves cabaret, live music and scandalous entertainment.
  • The talented cast includes ARIA Award-nominated singer Odette and the enigmatic Spencer Craig as host Gatsby.

After the sell-out success of its premiere season, GATSBY at the Green Light will return for a sultry stint at the Sydney Opera House this summer. Transforming the Studio into a 1920s-inspired club, the show revolves around cabaret, outlandish performances and all the glitz and glamour of the Roaring Twenties.

Despite being inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s iconic novel, the show doesn’t follow the storyline exactly— instead, it immerses audiences in the dazzling world of Gatsby’s legendary parties. Think debauchery, sensuality and opulence.

Sydney Opera House Head of Contemporary Performance Ebony Bott shared her excitement over the return of the dazzling production, stating:

GATSBY at The Green Light draws you into a world of intrigue and refined decadence – and is a truly spectacular night out! The sell-out success of its premiere season proves audiences remain captivated by Gatsby’s glamour, and we’re delighted to once again extend the most coveted invitation of the season.”

Circus acts and hair-hanging experts

The show will feature ARIA Award-nominated artist Odette, who will sing soulful tunes as performers spin, twirl and fly through the air. Canadian circus artist Spencer Craig, who specialises in aerial loop, will be hosting the show as charismatic yet mysterious Gatsby. Soaring by his side will be daring Caitlin Thomson-Moylan, who will play his eternal (but doomed) love Daisy.

Newcomers Maria Borysiak and Jacob McPherson will take flight as the young Daisy and Gatsby, embodying the dreamlike thrill of first love.

Aerial acrobatics is just the start. Expect hair-hanging from Miranda Menzies, a signature hat-standing act from Oscar Kaufmann, tap-dancing from Bayley Graham and plenty of sass and seduction from Bettie Bombshell, who was once awarded the title of Miss Burlesque Australia.

An immersive experience

The most important ensemble members are the service team. They’ll keep the energy high and the cocktails coming, ensuring a night of debauchery and fun true to the parties hosted by Gatsby. Caper & Crow, who are presenting the show along with the Sydney Opera House, combine hospitality with jaw-dropping entertainment, and GATSBY at the Green Light is one of their most dazzling creations yet.

Caper & Crow Director Craig Ilott says, “GATSBY at The Green Light is an experience we hope to be more than the sum of its parts – extraordinary aerial displays, awe-inspiring vocals, contemporary music, and terrific choreography melded together into a party designed to reunite a great love story.”
