Official return to Sydney

Produced by Global Creatures, the Australian powerhouse behind international hits like Boy Swallows Universe and Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, Moulin Rouge! The Musical famously became the first Australian-produced show to originate on Broadway when it opened at New York’s Al Hirschfield Theatre in July 2019.

Since then, it has wowed audiences across Broadway, the West End, Europe, Asia and beyond.

The CEO and Producer of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Carmen Pavlovic, said:

“Australian audiences embraced Moulin Rouge! The Musical with incredible passion. It was extraordinary to feel that energy in every city we played.

We heard from so many people who missed out the first time, and just as many who couldn’t wait to come back for a taste of the Spectacular. Bringing the production home again is a thrill for us. It’s what audiences asked for, and we’re delighted to deliver.”

Auditions for the next Aussie superstar cast will commence in Sydney from March 16-21, 2026, before moving to Melbourne from March 23-26, 2026.

The Plot

Based on Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary 2001 film, which was filmed entirely at Fox Studios in Sydney, the stage adaptation transforms the Parisian nightclub into a full-blown theatrical spectacular.

Set in Paris at the turn of the 20th century, the story follows Christian, a young songwriter who falls hopelessly in love with Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret.

The Moulin Rouge is going bankrupt, and the club’s owner, Harold Zilder, will do whatever it takes to save his beloved show, setting Satine up with a wealthy Duke who he believes can save the show.

Their romance unfolds amid backstage rivalries, bohemian ideals of “truth”, “beauty”, “freedom” and “love”, and the looming threat of the powerful Duke.

The musical score celebrates over 160 years of music, from Offenbach to Lady Gaga, weaving iconic songs from the film with contemporary chart-topping releases in the decades since. The result is a high-voltage mash-up extravaganze, packed with lavish costumes, incredible set design and groundbreaking choreography, turning the theatre into an immersive cabaret playground.

Directed by Tony Award winner Alex Timbers, with a book by John Logan and choreography by Sonya Tayeh, the production has collected 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, plus an Olivier Award and multiple Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle honours.
