There are plenty of things happening in Sydney this weekend, but all eyes are understandably on the 47th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade which stalks down Oxford Street on Saturday night (March 1) from 6:30pm.
As always, Saturday is primed to be one of the biggest days for the gays, which is why Kylie Minogue scheduling her own headline concert on the same night has always felt… off.
Kylie has long been an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community and has frequently popped up at previous Sydney Mardi Gras parties. Our Queen of Pop going head-to-head with the parade this year just doesn’t feel right, even if there’s a special pride bus being chartered to zip concertgoers from Sydney Olympic Park to the official Mardi Gras Party at the Hordern Pavilion.
But rest assured, there are rumours that the clash is actually intentional. With whispers that Kylie plans to make an appearance at the Mardi Gras after all, right alongside one of Australia’s other pop icons, Troye Sivan.
Kylie may be “popping up announced” at the official Sydney Mardi Gras Party, which starts immediately after the parade and is this year headlined by Honey Dijon and The XX’s Romy. But while those two names can certainly draw a crowd, the party missing a definitive headliner is our first major clue. Mind you, this is a party with a long legacy of pulling in major headline acts like Cher, Dua Lipa, George Michael, Cyndi Lauper, Olivia Newtown-John and Sam Smith.
Having Kylie and Troy Sivan as surprise double headliners for the Mardi Gras Party would make global headlines.
So, is this is all a fantasy or does this rumour hold weight?
Consider this.
Sydney Mardi Gras recently announced via Instagram that US singer-songwriter Leland has joined the official lineup for the Mardi Gras Party and that he will be bringing “friends.” Fans have already noted that Troye and Leland are real life friends. The Instagram post also used one of Troye’s songs, and the artist’s own brother commented on it. Plus, there’s a lightning bolt emoji in the caption, which has become closely associated with Troye’s single “Rush“).
Kylie has also worked with Leland before. Not only that, but Romy was just booked as the support act for the Kylie’s Tension Tour dates in North America.
These might all just be useful coincidences. But cryptic marketing is du jour for the social media age, and so we’re pretty much banking on seeing both Kylie Minogue and Troye Sivan make surprise appearances at this year’s Mardi Gras Party.
Final tickets to the Mardi Gras Party are now on sale from $229.
