Most Aussies would agree the ultimate way to celebrate Australia Day is with a harbour cruise. Sydney Travel Guide has waded through all the options in 2026 to bring you all of the best floating fun for your day on the water.

It’d be un-Australian to celebrate Australia Day without some sort of water-based activity. And the ultimate fun is to hit the harbour for a cruise. It doesn’t need to be flash or fancy, it doesn’t need to burst the purse strings. It just needs to stay afloat, preferably provide a few sangas (aka lunch or dinner) and embrace all the Aussie traditions of flags, green and gold, pumping music, shenanigans, tom-foolery, some hooligans, plenty of riff raff, loads of banter, a few loud sheilas and… you get the drift.

Here’s our list of the best harbour cruise options to embrace the Aussie tradition of sailing on our nation’s proudest day on January 26.

Sydney By Sail has harbour cruises on Australia day. Image supplied.

Sydney by Sail

Best for: Australia Day Live concert. A family and child-friendly cruise option.

This is a fleet of eight luxury sailing yachts, and in 2026 they’re forming a series of sailing manoeuvres in synchronised formation within Circular Quay, called a 2026 Australia Day Yacht Ballet. This unique activation takes place in the heart of iconic Sydney Harbour, within the cove of Circular Quay.  The yachts will be dressed to impress, lit up for the thousands watching on the foreshore, and the millions watching at home.

The 2026 Australia Day Yacht Ballet is always great to watch on the day, with all yachts dressed to impress with lights beaming for the thousands watching from the foreshore and the millions watching at home. Departing at 4:30pm and returning at 9:30pm, the vessels will shoulder plenty of the entertainment for the Australia Day Live concert. Plus, you can BYO at no extra charge and get some immersive behind-the-scenes context to how this extravagant Australia Day plan comes together.

Price: $295 per Adult, $147.50 per Child (Under 16) , $750 for Family (2 Adults, 2 Kids)

When: 4:30pm – 9:30pm

What’s included: BYO food and drink at no extra cost, or order through the gourmet suppliers.

Captain Cook Cruises is always a crowd favourite. Image supplied.

Captain Cook Cruises

Best for: Australia Day Lunch, Ferrython, Australia Day Harbour Parade and ferrython and a dinner, dj and fireworks option. Child and family-friendly cruises.

Captain Cook Cruises is generally the first operator Sydneysiders think of when looking for an Australian Day cruise. They’ve got all bases covered on the day with six cruise itineraries planned, from a three-hour Australia Day Lunch cruise onboard The Jackson ($165pp) to a four-hour Australia Day DJ & Fireworks cruise ($119pp), or the dinner cruise at $175 per person.

Two of the most popular (and shorter) options, however, are the Australia Day Ferrython cruise ($59pp) and Australia Day Harbour Parade cruise ($59pp). Both have been timed specifically to offer the best views of each event. Our pick would be the Australia Day Harbour Parade cruise, which lasts two hours onboard a twin-deck rocket catamaran with both indoor and outdoor viewings.

Official Australia Day Live Participating Vessels: Sydney 2000 and Starship Sydney
Official Australia Day Parade Participating Vessel:
 Sydney 2000

Price: The Ferrython and Parade cruises start at $59 pp. Lunch cruise starts at $165 pp, $175 pp for the dinner cruise and $119 pp for the DJ and fireworks. Kids prices are available.
