Australia’s biggest and most prestigious horse racing event returns next Tuesday, and although NSW isn’t granted a public holiday like Victoria, Sydney is still gearing up for a day of major celebrations.

The Melbourne Cup is one of the most famous horse races in the world, dating back to 1861. Held at the Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, the Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race is on the first Tuesday of November every year. The 3200-metre race is for horses three years and older and kicks off at 3pm. Dubbed “the race that stops the nation”, the day of the Melbourne Cup is a public holiday for Victoria, but also sparks celebrations across the whole of Australia.
