Romeo and Juliet at the Opera House – hurry, ends June 9

What would Shakespeare say? That’s the recurring question as we sit, spellbound, in the Opera House’s Joan Sutherland Theatre watching Benjamin Millepied’s interpretation of Romeo and Juliet

This reviewer has seen many interpretations of the star-crossed lovers. But this one is quite special.

It uses the whole of the opera house – stairwells, box rooms, you a name it.  Even the Opera House forecourt becomes the venue for Romeo declaring his love for Juliet – see on the big screen inside Joan Sutherland Theatre thanks to a cameraman following every move.

It’s truly multi-media, blurring the edges of what’s see on stage and what’s happening behind the scenes.

And it’s truly a story of our times.  Sometimes it’s a gay couple, sometimes lesbian and sometimes a man and a woman. Does it matter? You be the judge.

Romeo and Juliet – LA Dance Project

So who is Benjamin Millepied?

He’s a choreographer, filmmaker, and former principal dancer with New York City Ballet who moved to Los Angeles and co-founded L.A. Dance Project with Charles Fabius with the vision to create a new model for a dance organisation in America.

The Project produces a brilliant performance, and it’s hard to know who to single out.

The only downside – it’s a season that only lasts until June 9. So hurry – it’s a brilliant experience you won’t want to miss.
