If you planned to get tickets when news of the Anastasia musical coming to Sydney broke, now’s your time. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now and general sale starts on Friday.
John Frost announced that his Broadway hit will be coming to Australia earlier this year. It played to sold-out audiences on Broadway since its premiere in 2017, and has appeared across Europe, Latin America, Japan and North America. More than 15 major international awards later, it’s finally coming to Down Under.
What is Anastasia about?
There have been two films based on the captivating story of Anastasia, which you may recognise: the 1956 film starring Ingrid Bergman, Helen Hayes and Yul Brynner, and the 1997 animated film by 20th Century Fox which features a score by the musical’s creators, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.
If those don’t jog your memory, it is inspired by the mysterious story of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov, who was rumoured to have escaped the Russian Revolution. In the film and musical, Anastasia (now called Anya), suffers amnesia and spends 10 years living in an orphanage. Following the trail of an inscription on her necklace, she decides to travel to Paris to uncover her past, with the help of handsome conman and loveable ex-aristocrat, Dimitri.
The musical brings the 1997 animated film to life on the stage, with Ahrens and Flaherty forming two thirds of the Tony Award-winning creative team, alongside Terrence McNally.
Between the palace in Russia and 1920s Parisian streets, the musical is laden in opulence, from the set design to dazzling costumes. The score is as impressive and catchy as the film too, with Journey to the Past and Once Upon a December both included.
