Each year, an estimated 800,000 Muslim Australians observe Ramadan, a scared month of fasting, reflection and community. And for every day between Thursday, February 29 and Saturday, March 29, all practicing Muslims take part in the Iftar feast, marking the breaking of the fast at sunset.
For the rest of Sydney, getting involved in Iftar typically involves heading along to the Lakemba Nights food market, which has become world-famous and turns the lengthy strip of Haldon Street in Lakemba into a dynamic, colourful and incredibly diverse culinary playground.
But there’s a new way for the rest of us to get involved in the tradition of Ramadan, offering an authentic Lebanese Iftar feast with the multi-generational Afiouny family.
Meave O’Meara’s award-winning Gourmet Safaris tour company has teamed up with Cafe Levant to unlock this limited dining experience, where guests will be hosted at the Afiouny family’s homely cafe in Greenacre for a dinner that’s both insightful and intimate.
The one-night-only dining experience is a rare opportunity to experience the more intimate, family-focused side of Ramadan and is being offered for $120pp.
