A Sydney Cantonese institution returns to Crown Sydney

  • Icebergs and Golden Century will open in Crown Sydney.
  • Bookings will open in December.
  • Golden Century will be open for lunch and dinner.

Sydney restaurant institutions, Golden Century and Icebergs Dining Room and Bar are set to open new venues in Crown Sydney this summer.

The five-star hotel is already home to hatted restaurants Oncore by Clare Smyth as well as the Italian eatery a’Mare. It is also the home to Nobu from famed Japanese American chef, Nobu Matsuhisa as well as the steak restaurant Woodcut.

Golden Century closed its doors in 2021 after 32 years of serving Sydney late-night Cantonese fare and lunchtime Yum Cha.

But when restaurateur family Eric, Linda, and Billy Wong announced they would remerge at Crown, it came as a Christmas miracle.

Complete with its signature bowls of pippis in XO sauce and Peking duck, the restaurant will open in January 2025 with walls of live seafood.

Golden Century will take over the former site of the now-closed Chinese restaurant Silks on the third floor of the opulent hotel. It will seat 150 patrons and will be open for lunch and dinner, comparatively smaller than their Sussex Street venue.

Patrons will see the return of signature dishes like live lobster cooked two ways, abalone steamboat, and of course their pippis in XO sauce, cooked by the chefs from XOPP in Darling Harbour and The Century in The Star, Pyrmont. The Wong family will close The Century in December and have not announced the last day of service.

Wong says it’s important for the restaurant to offer various price points to accommodate for both large-scale banquets as well as the lunchtime rush for Yum Cha. There will be eight private dining rooms as well as a selection of new dishes.

Bookings will open in December.

Crown will also welcome Bondi’s Icebergs Dining Room & Bar for a summer residency at The Waiting Room which they are calling Icebergs Harbour Bar. The Bondi institution led by Maurice Terzini, will take inspiration from European hotel bars while offering classic dishes like the Iceburger and fried gamberetti.

Crown Sydney Chief Executive Officer Stanford Le said: “Crown Sydney is already a beacon of hospitality in this beloved city, so it feels natural to add to our repertoire two renowned offerings from Sydney itself. We are thrilled to become the new home of the iconic Golden Century, offering our guests an experience that is at once nostalgic and exciting, and to partner with Icebergs for a summer residency of their bar experience, bringing their Bondi expertise to the harbourside.”

“Since 2016, Crown Sydney has invested heavily in activating the Barangaroo precinct. By adding two more hospitality institutions to our resort, we are proud to be enhancing the night-time economy offerings, well-timed with the opening of direct and fast metro services to this fabulous waterfront” added Le.
