Asian sauce and condiment brand Lee Kum Kee has tapped dessert overlords Gelato Messina to create two new gelato flavours for the Lunar New Year.
The first-of-its-kind collaboration has inspired Messina to create two new limited-edition flavours to welcome the Year of the Snake. Both flavours will run through Lunar New Year with several pop-ups in various locations.
“With over hundreds of different flavour profiles in Lee Kum Kee’s repertoire, it was a real challenge for us to narrow it down to our three starring sauces: Premium Soy Sauce, Seasoned Soy Sauce, and Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil,” said Head creative chef and co-owner of Gelato Messina, Donato Toce.
“Nearly every Australian family will have a bottle of Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce in their pantry so we wanted to play with it and stretch its capabilities.”
To pay homage to these iconic sauces Messina has created two flavours:
- Caramel & Soy Sauce gelato with Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce brownies.
- Coconut & kaffir lime gelato with peanut topping and Chiu Chow Style Chilli Oil peanut crisps.
These saues are typically found accompanying a plate of dumplings or splashed into some stir fry. To then take these flavours and infuse them into indulgent gelato flavours is another fine example of how subversiveness and sheer creativity has built the Gelato Messina brand into an icon for Aussies.
The surprising collaboration took months of flavour profiling from Messina’s creative department, eventually settling on these two flavours which will be offered for free on Saturday, Februray 15 with a pop-up at Queen Victoria Building between 11:30am and 2:30pm.
These flavours are exclusive to the Gelato Messina pop-up so you won’t be able to find them in your local store.
