You just know the old man is lying when he says he doesn’t want anything. It’s nice to say thanks every now and again with a grand gesture to show dad you appreciate the work he’s put in day in and day out.

Seafood, steak, French, or a whisky masterclass. Which one will you pick to take the old man to this Father’s Day? We know you want something quick and decisive. Every restaurant worth their table salt are putting their best foot forward to dad day this year, but you want to make a choice now. Below we’ve got five of our top options for Father’s Day this year.

1. Saint Peter

Josh Niland’s world-famous Saint Peter is a pioneer in sustainable seafood with food you absolutely will not find elsewhere. Ever had a fish charcuterie platter? How about some southern Calamari split into strands of chewy spaghetti and flavoured in an ‘nudja bolognese? Sydney’s signature fine-dining seafood experience elevates this Father’s Day with Scottish whisky brand Tamdhu, presenting a pairing and set menu that’s both affordable and generous.

It’s a great way to try some of Niland’s signature dishes without committing to the entire degustation experience, where you’ll get some inspired whisky and seafood pairings as well, offering some of the best seafood in Sydney including the kitchen’s famous tuna wellington. Capped by a whisky-inspired dessert, this is a very rare opportunity to treat dad to Saint Peter and help him discover a brand that often flies under the radar in Australia, for just $200 per person.

2. The Cut Bar & Grill

Hunter St Hospitality’s legendary steakhouse has been going strength-to-strength since it reopened earlier this year, so it’s no surprise to see them pull no punches for their return to Father’s Day. Not many steakhouses know how to dial in that classic, well-groomed experience like this subterranean stunner, offering a set menu centred around the kitchen’s signature Bourbon Aged Blackmore Wagyu Rump Cup.

The special Father’s Day steak features a marble score of 9+ and is treated with a 14-day bourbon aging process to dial in exceptional depth of flavour. Also available is The Cut Roast, featuring slow-cooked Cape Grim signature prime rib served with crispy Yorkshire pudding, crushed peas, sauteed baby carrots and beef fat hasselback potatoes.

24 York opens in Sydney
This new restaurant in Sydney serves only steak frites, and does it exceptionally well (photo supplied).

3. 24 York

Paris has plenty, New York has a few. But Sydney has never had a steak restaurant that only serves one thing, and does it perfectly. Until now. What was a once a rowdy German bier hall is now the city’s very first steak frites restaurant. You only got one option here, and you can customise your steak frites with sides, sauces and all the condiments you need to really dial in the perfect French steakhouse experience.

So of course the place will be absolutely packed for Father’s Day this year. You’ll need to book in soon, because everyone loves the “shiny new thing” when an occasion like this rolls around. You don’t want dad to miss out on that plate of premium grass-fed scotch fillet topped by tallow-fried shoestring frites. Sometimes the best Father’s Day lunches and dinners are simple, efficient and leave plenty of room for conversation.

4. Archie Rose Distilling Co.

Book dad into a whisky blending masterclass at Archie Rose Distilling Co., where each guest learns how to create their own personalised whisky before walking away with two bottles each. If your old man likes the brown stuff, there’s really no better way to treat him than with his very own pair, which he himself has complete claim over. Yeah, you’ll never hear the end of it, but it’s worth turning him into a distiller for the day if you want something much longer lasting than a $200-per-person lunch.

Everyone in the masterclass gets to get home two personalised whiskies, blending to their liking, as well as a free drink on arrival. The masterclass is an efficient, clear lesson about the history of whisky making as well.

One of Sydney’s premier French restaurants is offering their full a la carte menu on Father’s Day, where every dad gets a free beer on arrival and goes in the draw to win an epic meat tray. One of the most beautifully postured dining rooms in Sydney gets by brilliantly with dishes like steak and anchovy tartare, scallop agnolotti and the dramatic whole dry aged Aylesbury duck ร  la Presse.

Note that a Sunday service charge will apply but it’s worth the extra punch for one of the most upscale French feasts in Sydney.
