I’m obsessed with season two of Nine Perfect Strangers right now. The TV adaptation of Aussie author Liane Moriarty’s book stars Nicole Kidman as wellness-guru-with-a-difference, Marsha, and season one was filmed up the coast in Byron Bay.
This week, the Oscar-winning actress shared her favourite spots in Sydney, offering a unique perspective on the city where she grew up. โEvery time I return to Sydney, thereโs a feeling of comfort and ease,โ she told The New York Times. โThis city is where I grew up, where my sister and her family live, where my children love to spend their holidays.โ From tranquil gardens to iconic eateries, let’s explore Sydney through her lens.

Serene Escapes in the Heart of the City
Royal Botanic Garden
Nestled near the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Botanic Garden offers a peaceful retreat with panoramic views of the harbour. It’s a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy lush greenery and scenic walks. “It’s Sydney at its best,” says Kidman. She also recommends a walk round to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, saying “From here, you have a stunning view of Sydney Harbour and Opera House.”
Harbour Pools
Sydney’s harbour pools, such as the iconic North Sydney Olympic Pool, provide a refreshing way to experience the city’s waterfront. These pools blend natural beauty with recreational facilities, perfect for a leisurely swim. Kidman describes Sydney’s as “some of the most beautiful”, saying โBondi is just one of them, thereโs also Balmoral, the Greenwich Baths, Redleaf, Fairy Bower โ all right off the beach.โ

Cultural and Culinary Delights
Art Gallery of New South Wales
For art enthusiasts, the Art Gallery of NSW houses an impressive collection of Australian and international artworks. It’s a cultural hub that reflects the city’s artistic spirit. Kidman’s mum passed away last year, and she reflected on their childhood visits: โMy mother would always take me to see every exhibition; my sister and I also loved to take my mum to the gallery. She was a great patron of the arts and loved to walk its halls and support the work of local artists.โ
Harryโs Cafรฉ de Wheels
โWho doesnโt love an Aussie meat pie?โ asks Nicole. Great question. Known for its classic meat pies, this eatery has been a staple for decades. Fun fact: it started out as a food cart near the harbour in Woolloomooloo almost a century ago! Kidman recommends the Tiger Pie, with its flaky crust and minced beef, mashed potato, peas and gravy filling.
Indulgent Retreats
Venustus Spa
Located in Paddington, Venustus Spa is renowned for its luxurious treatments, including the unique six-hand massage. โThey just know how to take care of people, and their treatments are amazing, especially after a long flight,โ the actor says. โA massage at Venustus will have you ready to go to take on the city.โ
Nicole Kidman’s selections highlight the multifaceted nature of Sydney โ from its serene natural spots and vibrant cultural institutions to its culinary landmarks and luxury retreats. The actress struggled to choose her favourites, though, also mentioning “the zoo, Luna Park, and if you want to get out of town, the Blue Mountains! And the list goes on.” We’re with you on that, Nicole.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, exploring these places can offer a deeper appreciation of what makes Sydney truly special.
