Grammy Award-winning Afrobeats superstar Burna Boy is touring Sydney with a show locked in at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, October 18.
It’s only been three years since Burna Boy’s breakout hit, “Last Last,” steamed up charts around the world, shifting eight million units in Sweden alone and putting up impressive numbers in the Australian market, earning Burna Boy one of many Platinum plaques. In those three years, he has sat the forefront of not just Afrobeats, but spearheaded an increasingly exploratory music industry that’s only now started to bleed out of historic centres like the USA and UK and showcase a greater variety of artists.
There’s no such thing as “world music,” anymore. It’s just music. Burna Boy played a significant role in that, deepening the world’s interest in African sounds beyond that major cultural touchstones of jazz, hip hop, R&B and blues.
And so Burna Boy’s upcoming Sydney show has considerable hype sitting behind it already, all but ensuring success for the four-date visit, which will also see the “Sweet Love” singer play shows at Melbourne’s Sidney Myer Music Bowl (Thursday, October 16), Brisbane Entertainment Centre (Monday, October 20) and Perth’s RAC Arena (Friday, October 24).
With a new studio album (No Sign of Weakness) to showcase, Burna Boy will be pulling on a rich discography to fuel his famously electric live performances, which played a major role in getting him the point where he now boasts 11 Grammy nominations, four BET Awards for Best International Act, and a 2023 Billboard Music Award for Top Afrobeats Artist. As it stands, Burna Boy is the first and only African artist to have two albums blow pass 1 billion steams of Spotify.
