It’s Official: Sydney is home to the world’s best coffee shop

  • The best coffee shop in the world has been named, and it’s located in Sydney’s inner-city suburb of Chippendale.
  • Toby’s Estate Chippendale is the stalwart roasting company’s flagship location, having opened in 2005.
  • Two other Australian coffee shops have made it into the top ten coffee shops in the world list.

Toby’s Estate has always been a reliable name for Sydney’s fussiest coffee enthusiasts.

The company’s stalwart roastery and cafe in Chippendale opened in 2005, just four years after Toby’s Estate began turning out some of Australia’s most popular blends and single origin coffees.

And while it’s always been a formidable presence in the ongoing coffee war between Sydney and Melbourne, it’s still a shock to see Toby’s Estate’s flagship location officially ordained as the world’s best coffee shop.

Mind you, this is a world that includes such coffee meccas as Tokyo, Chiang Mai and Amsterdam. And out of all the many coffee shops and cafes dotted across those destinations, to see Toby’s Estate best them all is cause for celebration. Even if it’s only to rub the win in Melbourne’s perennially smug mug.

So what makes Toby’s Estate Chippendale the best coffee shop in the world?

The first-ever Top 100 Coffee Shops list has been compiled using the following metrics:

  • Quality of coffee
  • Barista experience
  • Customer service
  • Innovation
  • Ambience & Atmosphere
  • Sustainability practices
  • Food and pastry quality
  • Consistency

Toby’s Estate scores high on all accounts. The brand has been noted for its experimentation and commitment to sustainability, whipping up a wide range of coffees that appeal to everyone, from the casual commuter to the snobby sipper. The brand has become known for simple, elegant blends like the intense toffee-like Broadway and popular butterscotch-centric Woolloomooloo.

The space itself is a sea of calm. Architectural firm Russell & George worked the space with a slick contemporary look with defined seating areas, state-of-the-art machines and shelves packed with colourful packets of Toby’s Estate’s many specialty brews. Oversized glass doors at the back of the space let customers peek at the roasting process.

To celebrate the win, Toby’s Estate will be giving away free coffee on Thursday, February 27. Pencilled in for the morning (7:30am – 11am), the roastery will be churning out free cups of the life-giving liquid. There’ll even be a live DJ to sketch in a bit of a day party vibe.

Australia and our buddies across the ditch in New Zealand make up a tenth of the entire list, speaking to the unseasonably strong, technique-driven spread of coffee shops in our part of the world.

Australia had two other entries in the top 10. Melbourne’s crowd-favourite Proud Mary slides in at #4 while Brisbane’s Coffee Anthology trails at #8. Other notable entries include Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas (#2), Austria’s Gota Coffee Experts (#3), Norway’s Tim Wendelboe (#5), Singapore’s Apartment Coffee (#6) and Colombia’s Tropicalia Coffee (#10).

Other Australian coffee shops that made the top 100 list include:

  • Veneziano Coffee Roasters, Melbourne at #19
  • Calere Coffee, Melbourne at #28
  • Exchange Coffee, Adelaide at #37
  • Fonzie Abbott, Brisbane at #70
  • Vacation Coffee, Melbourne at #71
  • Seven Seeds, Melbourne at #87
