When it opened in London, Back to the Future: The Musical quickly became a success story, scooping up the Best New Musical award at the Laurence Olivier and What’s On Stage awards. It also swiftly transferred to Broadway. Adapted for the stage by the creators of the original movie trilogy, the special effects have to be seen to be believed.
The show follows the exploits of Marty McFly and Doc Brown with theatrical renditions of classics like Chuck Berryโs ‘Johnny B Goode‘ and Huey Lewis and the Newsโ ‘The Power of Love‘ and ‘Back in Time.’ Originalย Back to the Futureย composer Alan Silvestri and acclaimed songwriter Glen Ballard worked on the music and lyrics for the show, while Gale himself penned the book.
No exact date has been confirmed for the showโs debut at Sydney Lyric Theatre but we do know itโll be arriving in September 2025. A ticket waitlist is already open.

Who will play Marty McFly in Australia’s Back to the Future: The Musical?
In April, we found out that Tony Award-winning actor Roger Bart would reprise the role of Doc Brown, having impressed audiences in both the West End and Broadway. Starring opposite him as Marty McFly will be Axel Duffy, a rising star from Brisbane.
His credits already include Black Swan Theatre Company’s Oklahoma, for which he won the Performing Arts WA awards for best male performer and best newcomer. He’s also starred in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Neylon and Peele’s The Beep Test at Theatreworks, most recently.
