Taronga Zoo is a must-visit destination for anyone heading to Sydney this December, so we’ve partnered up with the world’s most beautiful zoo to give away five family passes, worth $840 ($168 each). These tickets give two adults and two children general admission into the incredible zoo, offering a full day to explore the zoo’s incredible wildlife and stunning shows.
What’s on at Taronga this summer?
Taronga Zoo has over 4000 animals to meet, as well as over 15 free keeper talks daily, plus an array of animal encounters. From the beautiful giraffes roaming against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour to the cuddly koalas clinging to gum trees, Taronga offers plenty of photo opportunities, educational fun and one of the best views in Sydney. Here are all the best shows and experiences included with your family pass.
1. New arrivals: Hari the rhino and friends
This summer, catch a glimpse of Hari, Sydney’s only Greater One-horned Rhino, as he settles into his brand-new home at Rhino Reserve. He’ll be joined by three playful Asian Water Buffalo, Kahn, Sahasi and Babu, who are sure to charm visitors with their big personalities and love of mud baths. His new enclosure, located in the middle of the zoo, will feature moats that he can swim around, so zoo visitors can appreciate the beauty of the animal. It’s been two decades since Taronga had an Indian Rhino at their facility, and with the species being the second-biggest land mammal in Asia, there’s no doubt Hari will draw a lot of attention.
2. Junior Investigators Trail by Disney’s Zootopia 2
Taronga Zoo will be celebrating the release of Disney’s Zootopia 2 by creating the ultimate Junior Investigators Trail around the zoo. Kids can follow the clues, solve puzzles, snap photos with Zootopia characters, and crack the case for a chance to win exciting prizes, including tickets to see Zootopia 2.
3. The Seals for the Wild Presentation
One of my personal favourite shows, the Seals for the Wild, features a range of talented rescue seals showing off their skills (and their very loud vocals). You’ll meet Bondi, a beautiful seal found with significant shark injuries on Bondi Beach. After making a full recovery, the energetic seal now shows off its natural abilities, while also teaching kids about rehabilitation and the marine environment. One word of caution: if you’re wearing something nice, steer clear of the splash zone! You can catch it every day at 11am, 1pm and 2pm.
4. Free-Flight Birds Presentation
See the Andean Condor spread its three-metre wide wings. Learn about exotic birds such as the Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo and Galah, as they fly against the iconic Sydney Harbour skyline. Showcasing some of Australia’s most majestic birds in action, this show is on daily at 12p and 3pm. Make sure you get there quickly as seats fill up fast!
5. Crawly Critters Alive Show
Get ready to squirm (and smile!) at Crawly Critters Alive, Taronga’s interactive live show where you can get up close with fascinating insects and spiders like never before. This crittery show will be on at 11:45am & 2:30pm daily throughout the school holidays.
6. Adorable Aussie wildlife
Few of us will be lucky enough to see a koala bear in the wild, so head to Taronga’s Nura Diya Trail instead, and spot Kangaroos, Dingo pups, a Southern Cassowary and the cuddly koalas on the 400-metre walking trail. The koala exhibition includes a winding path on an incline, so that you can watch the bears from all angles, whether they’re hiding among the leaves or clinging to the top of the branch.
